Distance
Learning distance is beneficiary to ear training. Noticing the difference between 2 notes (and chords) can help you learn a song without your instrument at hand, or help you write a song without your instrument or a recording device handy.

I have a friend that I write songs with. When we write together he sits quietly in a corner with his notebook and pencil. He charts out his idea without his keyboard. He can hear the sounds, chords, and distances in his head.

Beethooven had the same gift. He wrote entire symphonies while being deaf!

Here we're learning the terminology of distance. Later we will study the actual tones and distinguish distance between them. Knowing the definitions helps us to communicate the tones to one another. Recognizing tones develops ear training.
