Chords are built from notes in the Major scale.

The basic chord begins with the 1 3 5 notes from the Major Scale.
The lowest note being the root, or the name of the chord. Altering and adding other notes from the Major Scale give the chords their personal characteristics.

Extensions of the chord use the 7 9 11 13 and sometimes 15.
There are other chords but this diagram covers a lot of bases.
