In a small town in Alabama
Just outside of Tuskagee
There was a heat wave
There was a dry spell
Haven't seen a drop of rain in weeks
Out on back roads two young lovers
Went out driving after dark
Flicked a ciggarette out the window
Looking for a quiet place to park
It didn't take long in the dry grass
For that tiny spark to turn to flame
On the front lawn of an old building
Where on Sunday mornings
All the townsfolk came
Holy Smokes
The church burned down
Everybody stop and stare
People come for miles around
Bow your heads and say a prayer
All the townsfolk were broken hearted
That their beloved house of worship was all gone
Some people said was the devil
Some said it must have been the will of God
But they decided to pull together
Dontate what they could afford
They would build a brand new chapel
Hallelujia, Praise the Lord
Never knowing that they were guilty
The two young lovers
The first wedding on that new altar
I guess that some things
Were meant to be
